Voices from Overseas Institutions
A dinner buffet would be nice (delegates are tried in the evening)
Would be happy of students upload their information.
It is difficult to assist students when we do not have information before the workshop.
More instruction about application procedure of CSC
The Canada room was much too hot. It was very uncomfortable.
Your online system is the best I have ever seen. Wonderful to search - view documents and schedule appointments.
Perhaps 1.5 days instead of 2.
I would have appreciated to be noticed that Canada would be in a separate room. For sure, it is less noisy but at the same time we were less visible. Also, we have the wifi problem on Saturday morning, but the wifi network was not reaching Canada room on Saturday. We had to request an external device to connect to wifi.
Fairlink services are excellent as always!
Internet seemed to be working better this year.
Food-fantastic!
The purpose of this workshop needs to be clarified to students in future workshops.
The internet had a much better connection this year which was great.
iSchedule system counter-productive, as student perception that can only meet with professors if scheduled meeting.
Close the spaces between tables so studnets can not short cut
I am really impressed by the quality of the students. All of them have a very good level of English. They are motivated. I have appreciated very much this kind of workshop for students recruitment and especially the system of online iSchedule system.
Good exposure of the university for those who attended the workshop.
More focused on individual's need.
Beijing Workshop should be only one-and-a-half days long.
It was productive and pleasant and well-organized.
Thank you for your great organization!
Cooler rooms!
Do not put us in a separate room!
Would prefer to be in the large room (not separate: Canada room ).
Unlikely, exorbitant expense to attend (table registration)
Volume much better on Saturday than Sunday!
There is a huge problem with internet. It is almost impossible to use it since it is too slow.
iSchedule:
Would like to make message as unread as somehow mark;
Only allow students to contact after meeting the document requirements;
We wish to see more post-doc candidates.
Very well organized event students very motivated to come to UK to do PhD.
Lunch/tea/coffee excellent.
Overall useful. However, the first 1/2 day is the best and more busy. Sunday is relatively weak for numbers and quality and it is questionable whether this day is worthwhile.
The quality of the visitors varies a lot. Some could start right away, others are a waste of time. I and the visitors would benefit a lot from a pre-selection at the gate.
Perfect organisation!
2) economics substantial number, but business not mant vissitors.
3) we prefer to have interviews as a team, but the system does not allow this, so difficult to indicate availablity in the system.
Website should contain a "projects" subsection and should allow for the selection of candidates by non-attending faculty members to be interviewed by the attending scientist.
we would have appreciated if Fairlink had advised us that we would be in a separate smaller room. The dynamic is quite different with that of a big room. In general, for the whole workshop, it seems that there were less students coming to workshop. Maybe we are mistaken!
Thank you for all good help and perfect organization.
Perfect organization!!! Thank you!
Very well organized and attended with hood candidates.
But very expensive: the cost for us to attend. is $11,000 per delegate. This uses up a lot of our recruiting budget.
It is better to require candidates to upload all information before & can be visible for the professors.
It could be nice to add students to the agenda on the spot for future reference.
I had lots of students not show up today, and last minute cancellation online.
English level was lower than Beijing.
Students not as prepared as Beijing.
Venue cold;
Tea not as good as BJ.
Ishcedule system of questionable utility, but event organiaed well.
Acoustics in smaller room for university of Melbourne was very poor. There were too many students in small room for us.
Students did not always upload the necessary information!
In general it's the best one I know but even good things can be a bit better.
Point 5.1 TRANSCRIPT:
a) I suggest a notice for the students to upload no documents in Chinese language because most of the colleagues cannot read or communicate in Chinese.
b) Some students have “strange combinations” for Bachelor and Master (a Bachelor in Finance and a Master in Physics) or the subject of study is not clear for us (like Chinese traditional medicine). In these cases the Bachelor transcript can be a great help for us. Usually they have study 40 – 50 different topics in the Bachelor. The knowledge of the single topics is helpful to get an idea about the content of the whole bachelor program.
Point 5.5 CV:
The size of the CV should not bigger than 5 or 6 pages.
Point 7 Target Major:
I don’t know if you provide the students a list for selection of the subjects but if the students can fill here with a few words their wish for the future research it will be more informative.
For instance: The student has study Astro Physics and fills under point 7: I wish to continue my studies in the area of Physics of the solar system or about black holes.
My last point:
The students should be informed generally that most of the colleagues will not make an appointment without the upload of CV and transcripts.
So many students didn't show up to their appointment this year which was very unusual and happened never before.
My 3rd time coming for the Shanghai session and I feel it better and better.
Thank you for organising event.
Please provide coffee / tea in the interview room during workshops!
Organize coffee and lunch for delegate.
Good location. Students not as prepared as those in Beijing.
Excellent workshop, more students this year in Shanghai.
Air condition does not work properly.
Lecture room very small.
"how to do an interview" would be good for the applicants
The 1pm -6pm slot is good as it is busy all afternoon - good as your time.
Internet can be slow at times. Capacity neeeds improving.
Coffee poor quality!
-The actural face-to-face interview is done regardless of the iSchedule-based booking.
-iSchedule way want to put categorical statistics of students interest, so that the universities can send professors in more relevant disciplines.
The appointment system in Shanghai is less used by students than Beijing.
We used to see 100 students in Beijing in the first years but since we added Shanghai, we don't even see 100 students in Beijing and Shanghai in total together.
It is really a great idea to organize such a PhD Workshop giving an opportunity to meet candidates face-to-face. I am really impressed by the quality of the students, their level of English. I appreciate very much the iSchedule system, especially iSearch system. I wish a good continuation to you, and thank the organizers.
iSchedule was very helpful fro viewing the students before meeting them, but the majority did not show up when expected and many not at all, so i am not sure how useful it really is. It may be better to have students just contact you on the day, then they are no expectations of fixed times.
A bar code system for recording students could be helpful.
